So, what is an Anti-Social Worker?
“I’m not a conventional therapist,” says Mike Preston.
“In fact, I’m not any kind of therapist. I’m just a friend
who helps you rationalize your behavior.
And who doesn’t want rational behavior?”
As a younger man, Mike Preston spent a decade paying his dues on the front lines
of the mental health system. After serving as a Teachers Aide, a Residential Counselor,
and a Community Caseworker, Preston made the natural transition into stand-up comedy.
Now, after almost twenty years of entertaining in nightclubs and bars, Mike Preston
has transformed himself from “someone with a bad attitude” into “an arrogant
professional.”
“I realized that the only difference between me and an actual Social Worker
was a set of professional ethics. So, by calling myself an Anti-Social Worker,
I can bypass all that messy legal stuff about standards and practices.”
Eager to jump into the middle of America’s love affair with pop psychology and
instant cures, Preston soon developed a larger than life persona, complete with
questionable advice supported by dubious research.
The release of his first “self help” book, “STOP TALKING NOW!” was met
with deafening silence. Preston took that to mean that it was working.
Other books soon followed - “LOVE, GET OVER IT!” - “SO, YOU’RE A
STINKING DRUNK” and the most recent - “NOTHING IS YOUR FAULT!”
While none of these books are guaranteed to cure anything, they have been proven
to provide an entertaining respite from the daily grind of real life.
And, if laughter is the best medicine, Mike Preston can be categorized as “slightly
more effective than a placebo.”
High praise, indeed.
